Sneaker Recycling
It must be Spring…it is time once again to get those old athletic shoes out of the closet and recycle them! The Connecticut Recyclers Coalition / Nike Reuse-A-Shoe program continues for 2010 with a few important changes:
Our past programs ran through the month of June, so it is important to note this abbreviated schedule. The entire Reuse-A-Shoe program is being revised by the folks at Nike and new program guidelines will be available in June. At this writing we have no details about what the new structure will be; however, we will provide information just as soon as we can. Please notify everyone you know of who is involved in the shoe collections so that programs can be adjusted. The program has been most successful, but, unfortunately, we do not have a list of all of the collection partners. If you have any questions or would like to talk about the program, please contact me. Thank you for your patience—and all your wonderful collection efforts. Connecticut sent three 53 food tractor trailer loads of shoes to Nike in the last 12 months! Great recycling! The CRC encourages Connecticut residents to keep their sneakers out of the trash by donating them for reuse or recycling. If your sneakers are still in wearable shape donate them to a non-profit that will sell or pass along your sneakers for others to wear: Goodwill check your local listings also accepts non-sneakers Salvation Army check your local listings also accepts non-sneakers Shoe4Africa http://www.shoe4africa.org/ sneakers only Soles4Souls http://www.soles4souls.org/ also accepts non-sneakers If your sneakers are no longer wearable recycle them via the Nike Reuse-A-Shoe program. The CRC is proud to be one of the few state recycling organizations that has partnered with Nike on an on-going basis. Nike recycles the sneaker rubber into playground and all weather athletic surfaces: http://www.nikereuseashoe.com/. Sneakers must be dry and relatively clean. They must be delivered to Willimantic Waste Paper Company by May 20, 2010. No cleats or other non-sneakers, please!
